ICANN Member Offers Discounted Domains

NameIT, a member of the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers that is trying to demonopolize the domain name registration process, has rolled out its .net and .com registration service - and is undercutting prices from Network Solutions'.
While Network Solutions charges $70 for the first two years of domain name use, NameIT charges $68. While $2 doesn't make a huge
difference for individuals buying one domain, NameIT prices spell significant savings to Internet service providers, Web hosters and other commercial buyers of large blocks of domain names. In fact, NameIT gives further discounts to large buyers. For instance, those buying over 75 domain names pay only $55 for the first two years, and a lower renewal ratẹ
"We expect to be flooded with orders," said Cathy Cruz, NameIT's executive vice president of operations. "We are going head to head with Network Solutions with this new pricing model."
NameIT opened it doors for business in Februarỵ Should NameIT indeed develop a good business out of its ICANN privileges, it would be a good example that the non-profit is actually facilitating the improvement of the domain name registration process. The organization's charter calls for shifting the responsibility for the IP ađress space allocation, domain name allocation and other functions to a greater number of companies. These services are now performed under the ỤS. Government contract by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority and its contractors, CORE, Melbourne IT, Network Solutions, Oleane (France Telecom) and Register.com
